In a battle between 2016’s Class 4A and 3A state champions, UMS-Wright stymied Madison Academy’s momentum from Game 2 by driving in four runs in the first two innings of Game 3 on the way to a 5-1 victory.
Bulldogs first baseman Sam Plash led the way in the deciding Game 3 going 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a run on his way to being named MVP for the series. He drove in Tanner Allen then scored on a Skipper Snypes double in the first inning before driving in Conner Jednat in the following inning.
Madison Academy brought the early deficit from four to three in the bottom of the second with a Jake Christa solo home run. From there, UMS-Wright pitcher Brant Dixon would allow just three more hits of the five total for the Mustangs.
Madison’s best chance to cut the lead came in the fourth when the Mustangs were able to get runners on second and third with one out. Dixon then struck out Nate Buchanan and forced a fly out from David Hursman to end the threat. Wright tacked on a fifth run in the seventh inning with a Dalton Goff RBI single to score Christian Cooper.
Game 2 was decisive for Madison Academy as the Mustangs scored nine runs on 12 hits and two Bulldog errors for the 9-1 win. Dylan Murphy and Cade Morson combined on the mound for seven strikeouts while stranding nine batters including three in the seventh inning. James Nix went 3-for-3 from the plate with a two-run home run and four RBIs.
In Game 1, Jednat allowed just two hits and struck out seven in 6 & 1/3 innings of work before Allen closed out the game for the 5-1 win. Snypes scored twice in the game while going 2-for-2 with a pair of walks.
