Four teams have been announced for the 12th annual AHSAA Champions Challenge Football Classic according to an AHSAA press release.
The games will take place August 24th and 25th at Cramton Bowl in Montgomery with each game kicking off at 7 PM. Reigning Class 1A state champion Maplesville will face reigning Class 2A champion Fyffe on the 24th. Class 7A Region 3 winner Hewitt-Trussville will take on Class 6A Pell City on the 25th.
“We are very excited about the two games we have lined up,” said Alvin Briggs, Director of the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association (AHSADCA), the AHSAA’s coaching organization, in the press release. “The Fyffe versus Mapleville game pits two schools that were undefeated last season while the big-school game is a clash between two of the state’s up-and-coming programs. Each have storied histories and strong communities that love high school football. We thank the City of Montgomery for all they do to make these games possible each year.”
Fyffe finished the 2016 season 15-0 with a 28-0 win over Aliceville in the 2A Super 7 Final in Auburn. Maplesville won the Class 1A title with a 40-12 victory over Pickens County. The Red Devils will return wide receiver Nathaniel Watson.
Hewitt-Trussville finished the 2016 regular season 10-0 before suffering a stunning loss in the quarterfinals to Gadsden City, 29-28. Pell City finished 6-5 with a first round playoff loss in Keith Etheredge’s first season with the Panthers. Etheredge made his name by winning four state titles while at Leeds from 2006-2015.
Each game will be televised by Raycom affiliates.
