Fayette County came short two years ago in Tuscaloosa, and came back looking for revenge this year. UMS-Wright wouldn’t have any of it as the Bulldogs win their seventh state title with a 21-7 win over Fayette County at a snow covered Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa.

UMS-Wright was expected to run the ball well, and they did. Running back Symon Smith was named MVP after breaking a Super 7 record with 35 carries for 200 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Chance Stevenson led the way for Fayette County, throwing 17/36 for 165 yards, but he threw four crucial interceptions of which two ended up turning into points for UMS-Wright. Darius Nalls was his top receiver, hauling in 11 catches for 108 yards, but Fayette County just couldn’t punch it in until the fourth quarter when it was too late.

UMS-Wright now looks to next season when they get to defend this state title against not only the rest of the state, but newcomers to their region with 3A state champion Hillcrest-Evergreen joining along with 3A semifinalist Clarke County and 5A playoff team Williamson.

Fayette County moves to region 5 from region 6, and they add Curry from 5A. Cordova and Haleyville come over with them along with Northside, who was a 2-seed from region 4 this year.
