A back and forth game through three quarters got out of hand late as Mountain Brook ran away with the fourth quarter, outscoring Auburn 25-11 and winning the 7A title game 63-43.
It was all about tournament MVP Trendon Watford. Through halftime, Trendon Watford had 11 points and seven rebounds. He ended with a double-double 26 points and eleven rebounds. Sean Elmore from Mountain Brook added 17 points and Ben McCool had 10.
Near the end of the third quarter, we seemed destined to head to the fourth at a three point game, but Mountain Brook played for the last shot and got an open three to make it a six point game and swing all the momentum in favor of the Spartans.
In the fourth, Auburn couldn’t get past the full court press of Mountain Brook and gave up multiple turnovers leading to seven quick points to practically put the game out of reach.
For the Tigers, Mississippi State signee Garrison Brooks led the scoring with eleven. Antoine Pitts had six points and nine rebounds. Both players made the all-tournament team.
Mountain Brook is back on top of the state in basketball, winning their third championship in five years, but their first in class 7A.
