UMS-Wright started the season ranked #1 in the JoxPreps poll, but quickly fell after an opening week loss to 7A Mary Montgomery. Since then, the Bulldogs (3-1, 2-0) haven’t been beaten, and proved they are still one of the top teams in Class 4A with a big win over #2 Andalusia.
The Bulldogs of Andalusia (3-1, 1-1) started the season off right with a huge win over 5A Brooks in the champions challenge, but their first real test came this past Friday night. UMS-Wright was able to hold Andalusia three times inside the 15-yard line, including holding them at the 3-yard line in the fourth quarter.
UMS-Wright was led by their defense, including Jack Pugh, Trez Dixon, and Dalton Goff. On offense, UMS-Wright quarterback Tanner Allen scored from 38 yards out and also had a 29-yard touchdown pass to Michael Matthews. Allen finished 5-8 for 85 yards and a touchdown, and also rushed for 76 yards on 13 carries with a touchdown. UMS-Wright led in time of possession 28:05 to 19:55 as well.
Antonio Gurley scored the lone touchdown for Andalusia.
UMS-Wright improves to 13-0 all-time over Andalusia, and they also grabbed their 30th region win in a row. UMS-Wright has won the last four region titles in a row, but have been held out of the state title game since they won it in 2012. This was a strong first statement to show that they are the team to beat in the southern half of Class 4A.
Next week, UMS-Wright travels to Satsuma in another battle of undefeated region opponents, while Andalusia hosts Escambia County who is currently 0-2 in region play.
