In one of the better games we’ve seen in the AHSAA basketball state tournament, Parker and Spanish Fort battled to the final whistle, and even played extra time – but in the end, Parker came out on top 69-59.
A back and forth game saw the lead change multiple times, with each team dominating separate quarters in the first half. Parker had to hit a buzzer beater three pointer just to make it to overtime, but then the Thundering Herd was able to dominate the extra four minutes to come away with the win.
Parker came out and scored three straight baskets to jump up 60-54 in the first 1:17 of the overtime period. That would prove to be enough as they outscored Spanish Fort 15-5 in the overtime period.
Parker was led by a trio of players off the bench. Cam’Ron Beard led the team with 23 points and six assists. Xavier Williams had a double-double with 14 points and 11 assists. UAB football signee Eugene Minter came off the bench as well and had 11 points and seven rebounds.
Jason King led the starters for Parker with 16 points.
Spanish Fort had three players tied for the most points. Terrin Atkinson, Jalen Wayne, and Kris Abrams-Draine all had 13 points while Trae Berry had 12 points and five rebounds.
Parker now advances on to face Paul Bryant in the 6A boy’s state championship game which will be Saturday at 2:15 pm.
