Mississippi was able to ride the momentum of the performance in the girls game to sweep the state of Alabama and get a 96-91 win in the 27th Alabama-Mississippi All-Star boys basketball game at the Dunn-Oliver Arena Friday night.
Mississippi’s MVP, Cal-State Bakersfield signee Jarkel Joiner (Oxford), led all scorers with 24 points. Alabama MVP, Crimson Tide signee Herb Jones (Hale County), led the team with 17 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Troymain Crosby (Laurel) had 17 points and seven rebounds for Mississippi, while Ledarrius Brewer (Meridian) added 12 points and Dewayne Cox (Ripley) had 11 points. Alabama signee Galin Smith (Clinton) had eight points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots.
Alabama was coached by Darell Barber of Midfield and Richard Carter of Lanett. Shy’im Cunningham (Midfield) led the scoring for Alabama with 18 points. Malik Burnett (Lee-Huntsville) added 12 points and Javan Johnson (Austin) had 11 points and six rebounds. Burnett and Johnson have signed with Troy, Cunningham is currently unsigned. DJ Heath of Sacred Heart also had four assists and four steals for Alabama.
