The “Battle for the Cannon” played out more like a siege as 7A #1 McGill-Toolen made sure the cannon stayed orange for another year with a 43-0 victory over #6 Murphy at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
Wide receiver Marlon Williams got things started with an 80-yard touchdown pass to Turner McLaughlin on the first play of the game. Williams also finished with a receiving score as well.
Quarterback Bubba Thompson did most of the scoring, throwing three touchdowns on just seven completions in eleven attempts for 150 yards. Thompson’s other scores were thrown to Jalen Tolbert and Larry Rembert before leaving in the middle of the second quarter. McGill-Toolen finished the first half with 280 yards to Murphy’s 94.
Murphy was without their top two quarterbacks as Maurice Robinson was serving a suspension for missing practice and Russell Snider was suffering from an upper respiratory infection.
Next week, Murphy stays in Mobile but plays at Baker while McGill-Toolen takes their bye week. They’ll head to Foley on September 16.
