McGill-Toolen promotes defensive coordinator Hill to head coach

The 2015 Class 7A state champions and 2016 7A runner-up has decided to look within for their new head coach by promoting Earnest Hill to take over.

Based on recent success, McGill-Toolen looked to have ample opportunity to look for a proven name to replace Caleb Ross as head coach. But McGill stuck to their own staff and made Hill their man after showing what his defenses can do in the past two seasons.

Hill was hired in 2015 after a dismal 2014 campaign in which the Yellow Jackets allowed 29.3 points a game. In 2015’s state title run and 2016’s runner-up finish, McGill gave up 10.6 and 12.6 points a game.

McGill’s combined record over the last two seasons is 26-2. Hill had a stint as head coach at Greenville from 2011 to 2013 with a 19-15 record over the three years. He finished 11-1 in 2011 but 2-8 by 2013.

In 2014, McGill promoted Caleb Ross to the head coach position from offensive coordinator when Bart Sessions left. Ross took the Opelika head coaching position in March.
