Locust Fork came out putting up more points than we typically see from any team, boys or girls, in the first quarter, and rode that lead to a 3A state championship win over Pisgah 72-62.
Carissa and Kimberly Horton went 9-10 combined, including 3-4 beyond the arc and 20 total points between them in the first quarter. They would carry that success on throughout the game and put up a combined 37 points for the Hornets.
Locust Fork set a tempo that made it hard for Pisgah to keep up. The second quarter saw things calm down a little bit, but Locust Fork added another two points to their lead.
Pisgah cut into Lanett’s lead in the third, but Lanett began to play keep away for most of the fourth. Pisgah got the deficit down to six, but that’s as close as they could make it, before the final deficit would end up being 10 thanks to a couple of late layups by the Hornets.
Pisgah was led by Annie Hughes who had 27 points and eight rebounds, while Presley Higdon added 21 points and seven rebounds. The rest of the team combined had 14 points.
Pisgah out-rebounded Locust Fork 43-29, but turned the ball over four more times and Locust Fork hit six more threes than Pisgah did.
