Leroy looked like they were ready to run away with the 2A state title after the first 10 minutes of play. A near five minute drive led to a touchdown and 2-point conversion, then an immediate turnover led to another three minute drive for a touchdown to put the Bears up 15-0 early.

Lanett would then score 33 unanswered points to win their first ever Class 2A playoff state championship 33-15.

Lanett’s Terrion Truitt was named MVP after leading the Panthers in rushing with 13 carries for 90 yards and two touchdowns. He also had a catch for 16 yards and led the punt return game for the Panthers.

Truitt will return next year along with quarterback Kristian Story, who threw 11/19 for 129 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. Story also rushed 13 times for 70 yards. Story’s top target was 6’7″ receiver Anquaevious Pollard, who was a huge presence in the game as well with 5 catches for 66 yards and a touchdown.

For Leroy, it was all about Kelston Fikes, who ran 27 times for 107 yards and two touchdowns. However, that wasn’t enough as Lanett out-gained Leroy 316-137.

Leroy will remain in Class 2A, Region 1 next year in the 2018 reclassification, but Lanett makes a big move down to 1A and to the southern half. They were a 2A north team this year, so that will be a major change. Dropping down would normally be seen as an easier path in the playoffs, but Lanett will fall with some major players in 1A.

They join the region with 1A semifinalist Wadley, and will be competing in the playoffs against teams like Maplesville, Georgiana, Linden, Brantley, Elba (who also dropped down), St. Luke’s (who also dropped down) and of course new 1A state champ Sweet Water.

The southern half of 1A should be a doozy, especially with Lanett looking to continue their winning ways as the reigning state champion of Class 2A.
