L.C. Cole ousted as Fairfield head coach

Fairfield has decided not to keep L.C. Cole on as head coach in a move made this week.

Cole was named head coach in 2015 after a three-year stint from Rico Jackson that saw the Tigers miss the playoffs each season after nine straight postseasons under Jim Vakakes. Cole missed the playoffs in Year One with a 6-4 record but just 3-4 in region play.

This past seasons saw Fairfield once again go 6-4 in the regular season but a 5-2 region record was good enough for Class 5A Region 5’s three seed. The Tigers beat Hayden 14-7 in the first round before being knocked out by Scottsboro, 49-28.

Recently, Cole was linked to the Bessemer City head coaching position along with former Minor head coach George Bates. Bates took his Tigers to the Class 6A quarterfinals in back-to-back seasons.

For Fairfield, they’re looking for their first region title since 2005. They have six overall (’05, ’04, 1977, ’76, ’75, ’74) but have never made a postseason run past the semifinals, the last one in 1976. They’ll once again compete in Region 5 with state finalist Wenonah, Briarwood, and Pleasant Grove.
