Gordo puts up nine in two straight to sweep Class 3A state final

Gordo never trailed throughout their two-game sweep of Piedmont to win the Class 3A state baseball championship.

In Game 2, the Green Wave used a five-run fifth inning to put an end to Piedmont’s comeback attempt. Gordo began scoring in the first when Thomas Langdon drove in Collin Herring from second. Herring would bring Ridge Wood in from third with bases loaded on a chopper that Logan Pruitt failed to make a play on.

Piedmont would put up their first runs of the series in the fifth inning with Pruitt and Michael Rogers coming in to score and tie the game at 2-2. Gordo then went on their scoring romp in the bottom half of the inning that was highlighted by Davis Valls’ bases clearing triple. From there, Gordo put up two more runs while closing the door on Piedmont.

Game 1 was much more decisive as Langdon pitched a complete game one-hit shutout and struck out four in the 9-0 decision over the Bulldogs. Koy Chapman and Herring led the way on offense batting a combined 6-for-10 with Herring driving in three RBIs and plating twice while Chapman scored once. Herring went a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs in Game 2.

Langdon was named MVP of the championship series for his pitching performance in Game 1. From the plate, he was 0-for-2 in Game 1 but drew three walks while going 1-for-2 with a run, RBI, and two walks in Game 2.
