Brantley ended the day with their third straight softball state championship, but it didn’t come easy as the Bulldogs had to fight from the loser’s bracket. Billingsley got the better of Brantley in their first meeting in the winner’s finals 1-0. But Brantley was able to defeat Spring Garden 10-0 before beating Billingsley twice in a row to end the day.
The MVP of the game has to go to Alex Wilcox, who was named tournament MVP after leading her team to 4-1 and 5-1 wins Thursday night. She was 2-3 with a two-run home run and had three RBI’s in the final game.
But for Wilcox, the biggest victory came before today when she completed her final round of chemotherapy after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer in December.
“It’s made me realize how much just being out here means to me,” Wilcox told AL.com. “It’s not just the winning, it’s being able to be out here and play. I just wanted to be able to play as hard as I could for the team. I am so proud of this team. My teammates have been great all season. They’ve really kept me going through some tough times.”
Her younger sister, Kassidy, was 2-2 with a solo home run, two RBI’s and three runs.
Brantley has no seniors on their roster, despite winning their third straight title, so you can expect the Bulldogs to be back and to be one of the better teams, regardless of classification, in the state next season.
