AHSAA overturns postseason ban on Muscle Shoals, John Carroll

Earlier this year, the Alabama High School Athletic Association handed down one-year postseason bans for both Muscle Shoals and John Carroll for recruiting violations.

For Muscle Shoals, it involved Wilson all-state lineman Lex Morgan, who told the Florence TimesDaily that the Muscle Shoals coaches convinced him to come play for the Trojans. Chris Balentine, the coach involved with the recruitment, still has a one-year coaching ban.

John Carroll was busted too, with the school receiving the ban and coaches Donald Cunningham and Arthur Stokes receiving one-year coaching bans.

After appeals, the AHSAA Central Board has overturned those postseason bans, allowing both teams to compete for a spot in the 6A playoffs.

The Central Board also overturned bans on Daphne volleyball and Murphy girls basketball, so all of the above teams will be eligible for the playoffs in the 2016-17 school year.

In a news release, board President Mike Welsh said they felt like lifting the restrictive probation was “justified.”

Muscle Shoals plays in Class 6A Region 8 and will be a favorite to do well this season. John Carroll plays in 6A Region 5, but went 0-10 last season.
