Week 6 is in the books and with that, we have a better idea of how the regions will finish out in each classification. Some of the top teams have locked up a playoff spot at the very least and many are already in good position, barring crazy upsets, for a region title.
We take a look at how we feel the brackets could play out with only a few weeks left in region play. Below is the bracket as we see it here at JoxPreps. This is nothing more than us looking at the numbers so far and projecting where teams could finish. It is our opinion, and none of this is set in stone. As we near the end of the season, teams will begin to lock up playoff spots, and we will make sure to note when that happens.
With each team listed in the bracket, we have given a confidence grade. This shows how confident we are that a team will finish in a certain spot. A “HIGH” grade means that we feel they will almost assuredly finish in that spot. A “MEDIUM” grade means that we feel that the team will most likely finish somewhere around where we have them listed, maybe a spot or two off depending on future results. A “LOW” grade means that things are still way up in the air and this is only an opinion from us, but there is a lot that still has to play out.
Here is the JoxPreps bracketology for Class 7A as of right now:
HIGH = Most likely will finish where they are
MEDIUM = Most likely will finish within a spot or two of where our projections have them
LOW = May be in good position now, but things could drastically change with just one or two results
1. McGill-Toolen – HIGH
The one obstacle left for McGill-Toolen seems to be Fairhope, who is currently undefeated in region play.
2. Fairhope – MEDIUM
Before McGill-Toolen at the end of the season, Fairhope has to defeat Davidson. Since they are currently 4-0, we put them in second. A win over Davidson, barring any upsets, would have them in a region title game in the final week of the season.
3. Davidson – MEDIUM
Davidson’s defense has been outstanding this season, giving up only 5.3 points per game. Their game against Fairhope can put them right back in the region title conversation, but a 3-0 loss to Daphne could hurt them in tiebreakers, especially since Fairhope beat them. If they fall to Fairhope, they would only be two games away from a 3rd seed.
4. Theodore – LOW
Theodore’s only two losses are to Fairhope and Davidson. Assuming they lose to McGill-Toolen, they would need to win out to grab this fourth spot.
Others that could grab a spot: Murphy, Foley
1. Central-Phenix City – HIGH
Central-Phenix City has been dominant so far this year, with their only close game coming against Auburn. They crushed Bob Jones, Fairfield and Opelika in non-region play, and have a couple of decent opponents left. Lee-Montgomery looks to be their strongest challenger.
2. Lee-Montgomery – MEDIUM
Although they still have Auburn and Central-Phenix City left, they have looked good so far this season with their only loss coming to the assumed favorite out of 6A Region 2 in Sidney Lanier. They crushed Jeff Davis this past Saturday to set up a game against Auburn for home field in the playoffs.
3. Auburn – MEDIUM
It will all come down to their game against Lee-Montgomery this week to determine whether they are second or third with a potential to fall to fourth with a loss to Jeff Davis.
4. Jeff Davis – MEDIUM
Jeff Davis is in a tough spot right now with games against Central and Auburn coming up and a game vs. Prattville that could determine this final spot.
Others that could grab a spot: Prattville
1. Hoover – MEDIUM
We’ll start by saying this – even though all the teams here are marked as “medium” confidence, there is a major difference between 1/2 and 3/4 for Region 3. Hoover and Thompson, so far, have shown themselves to be the top teams in this region. They meet later this season to determine who may be 1 and who may be 2. For right now, we’re leaving Hoover in the #1 spot until someone actually dethrones them.
2. Thompson – MEDIUM
Thompson still has to get by Spain Park, which could change things up a little bit. Right now, Thompson looks like they are on an equal level as Hoover, but the Jags will look to throw a wrench in things this weekend as they host Thompson.
3. Mountain Brook – MEDIUM
Right now, Mountain Brook is over Spain Park on head-to-head after their crazy overtime game against the Jags. They should be able to win out to at least have them in this spot.
4. Spain Park – MEDIUM
Spain Park should be able to win out minus Thompson this week which is still up for grabs. They struggled a little against Huffman this past weekend. If they beat Thompson and Hoover beats Thompson, they could make a 3-way tie for second in this region.
Others that could grab a spot: Vestavia Hills
1. Hewitt-Trussville – HIGH
Hewitt-Trussville is easily the best team in this region and has all but locked this spot up. If they win out, which we assume will happen, then these four teams are essentially locked in.
2. Bob Jones – HIGH
Bob Jones has Gadsden City this week, but a win there most likely locks them up in the second spot.
3. Gadsden City – MEDIUM
Although they struggled to start the season, they are at 3-1 right now in region play. They get Bob Jones and a loss there will set up a game against Sparkman for this third spot.
4. Sparkman – MEDIUM
Sparkman has been the most improved team this year, sitting at 5-1 right now and only need one more win to have their first winning season since 2006. They only need to beat one more team to lock up this playoff spot as well, although they do have a couple of tough tests in Hewitt and Gadsden City coming up. If they beat Gadsden City, they can claim third place to avoid the 7A Region 3 winner.
