Briarwood (4-1, 3-0) quarterback William Gray threw two touchdowns to Luke Miskelley as the Lions outlasted #6 Mortimer Jordan (4-2, 3-0) 23-14 in the Hendrick Hoover Auto Mall Game of the Week Friday night.
Gray finished with 189 yards on 14-of-21 completions in what was a tight defensive battle through the first half before the Lions separated themselves enough from Jordan to feel a little secure. Running back J.R. Tran-Reno scored a 13-yard rushing touchdown to put Briarwood up 23-8 halfway through the fourth quarter.
The game changer came in the fourth quarter when Briarwood led 9-8. Safety Carson Donnelly intercepted a pass intended for Trey Peters and took it into Blue Devils territory before Gray threw his second touchdown pass to make the Lions’ lead eight.
On the other side of the ball, Briarwood’s defense made Spencer Brown’s night tough. Brown’s lone touchdown came in the third quarter when he punched it in to give Jordan an 8-6 lead, their only lead of the night.
Brown finished with 113 yards on 25 carries and couldn’t make big plays throughout the game. Quarterback Douglas Moore compounded the Devils’ offensive woes with three interceptions to just one touchdown on just 45.8% completion rate.
The Lions will head to Odenville to face off with St. Clair County in Region 5 play while Mortimer Jordan has an unusually placed off week before they resume league play October 7th against West Point in Region 6.
